CHANDIGARH: The highway robbers who waylaid a city industrialist and ransacked his house in Sector 33, Chandigarh, a week ago are basically members of a vehicle-theft gang. Disclosing this on the sidelines of the arrest of four more accused following a raid in Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Amritsar and Pathankot on Sunday, Haryana police on Monday claimed to have traced almost all vehicles stolen by them, while promising to make other details official with regard to their investigation in a couple of days.
We are very much on the right track and will crack the sensational case in a day or two, said VN Rai, ADGP (law and order), Haryana police.
A senior official playing a crucial role in the case but not willing to be named said the prime work of this inter-state gang was to lift vehicles, especially luxury ones, from national highways. The members are quite intelligent and have robbed more than two dozen vehicles from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh. They often used women members to execute their crime, he added.
Confirming it was the same group which struck at the gun house in Hoshiarpur two months ago, a senior Punjab police officer said, Haryana police has discussed the case with us. After they are through with their probe, well definitely take the accused on remand.
With teams which had gone to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan also returning, a source added, They recovered a Verna but the accused managed to get a whiff of the raid.
Contrary to popular belief, cops ruled out the robbers involvement in UCO and UBI bank heists in Himachal Pradesh during the past one month.
